I know it sounds disgusting, but keeping worms in your kitchen is a great way to use your organic waste.

You can buy red wiggler worms on Amazon. There is a link in my Amazon store if you need one. Also get some coconut core which is ground up coconut shells. This will serve as the substrate the worms will live in. I use a medium sized tote. It needs to be deep as a worms like to dig down. Drill holes in The lid and the upper sides.

Re-hydrate the coconut coir and put the worms in it. It’s important that you don’t let it get too wet or too dry. Now to feed your worms. You can put any organic scraps except citrus, onions or chili peppers in. It’s better if you bury the scraps so that fruit flies don’t lay eggs in them. However sometimes I am lazy and just throw the scraps on top of the coir. I want to tell you that worms are honestly extremely easy to care for and do not stink generally. They do smell pungent when I take off the lid, but otherwise, they don’t.

The worms will eat the scraps and then poop them out as castings. It is One of the best things you can put in potted plants and your garden. The practice of keeping worms for their castings is called Vermiculture. Keep an eye on your bin. If it gets too wet you need to drain the water out. This is called worm tea and may be added to any plants. It is valuable stuff so do not throw it out.

What’s great about keeping worms is that you only need to pay attention to them every couple weeks at minimum. I keep mine in my broom closet or under my sink. In the spring I feed the worms on one side of the bin heavily and take the castings, or dirt from the other side and put it in my garden.
