Sturdy Girl Life is about average people making small changes every day towards a more sustainable way of life. If we are honest, we won’t be able to do it all at once, it’s a journey. Let’s be gentle and unrelenting. Change won’t happen for the planet unless we ourselves are willing to make some uncomfortable changes in our everyday life.
25 years ago, I decided to made a decision that started things for me. I realized that the chicken I was eating that day had actually been a living being. I had never thought of it as something other than an object in the store. I became a vegetarian that year. In another few years, I looked in my bathroom cupboard and saw about one hundred bottles of various things. Altogether, there were hundreds of chemicals that I willingly put on my skin every day. I gave all of it away and decided that I would start from scratch. Making, my own everything.
That was a long time ago. Ive made hundreds of small changes to my life at times when I was ready to make them. I have learned a ton along the way that I think will be helpful to others. No, my garbage can isn’t all the way empty yet, but as I said, it’s a journey. We all have to be a bit more “sturdy”. Learn to use our muscles, dig in the dirt, listen to each other and to the environment, choose to do things the hard way sometimes, push ourselves out of our comfort zones and go beyond our own comfort for the greater good.

Olla Pots
Olla (pronounced oya) pots are a thousands year old technology that is super water efficient. Ollas are unglazed clay pots that you bury in your garden and fill with water. The water doesn’t have the chance to evaporate as it does with other traditional irrigation methods, but stays right where the plant needs it most. The water slowly seeps through the pot to keep the soil moist. Use of Olla Pots also reduces weeds. There are many methods out there. We are testing some here are at Sturdy Girl and will keep you updated as to how they are working. If all goes well, you will be able to buy them here.
